  • Respectful and Kind

    Published 16/11/23

This week, we had an online Kindness Workshop from the charity 52 Lives (www.52-lives.org) and their School of Kindness! We learned that kindness has three qualities – being friendly, generous and considerate.  We learnt about the science of kindness and the positive impact it has on our physical and mental health. Next, we practised empathy by watching videos of kindness in action and then said kind things to each other in the classroom.  To put our kindness into action, we thought of someone we knew who could do with a little kindness. We then made them something in our classrooms and plan to give it to them this week.  Finally, we looked at the quote ‘be the change that you want to see in the world’ and decided that we can help to create the kind of world we want to live in. The School of Kindness has a Kids’ Club which is free to join where you will get a free newsletter with kind challenges, stories, activities, jokes, competitions and videos to watch.  Just visit www.schoolofkindness.org/kids-club to sign up.

  • Inspiring Excellence in London

    Published 16/11/23

In order to Inspire Excellence, Key Stage 4 learners visited London to see Macbeth at the Globe Theatre.  This eagerly anticipated trip started with a train ride to Kings Cross and all were ready to walk to Camden Lock and the market there, where we visited the waffle shop.

A tube ride took us to the Thames and a short walk to the theatre.  All the learners were engaged, focused and a respectful audience.  This play forms part of Year 10’s GCSE English Literature programme.

The day finished with a huge delay because of signalling problems but everybody was safe but glad to see home.

  • Ready to explore the Stone Age

    Published 20/10/23

This term in history we have been learning about the Stone Age. We have looked at the three different periods within the Stone Age (Palaeolithic, Mesolithic, Neolithic), why the period was called the Stone Age and how inventions advanced over the years. We have spent time looking at Stone Age settlements and recreating some in shoe boxes and learning about Stonehenge, recreating this with clay!

  • Ready to be Creative at YSP

    Published 20/10/23

Learners experienced a trip to Yorkshire Sculpture Park this term to see the work of the American artist Leonardo Drew. The large-scale assembled sculpture is described as a ‘powerful reflection on the weight of collective experience, memory, and the cycles of life and death, decay and regeneration.’ Learners had mixed opinions about the work, which engaged them in discussion and conversation. Connecting to the ideas of the artist, a printing workshop ended the session and learners repurposed fallen and decaying leaves that they had collected and used these as art stencils to produce screen prints on to calico material.

  • Inspiring a love of Reading

    Published 19/10/23

We are aiming to become the best, most fluent readers we possibly can, we know this will help us with our learning in all subjects and in the real life world of work.

This term we are celebrating appointing a KS4 Reading Ambassador. She is showing willingness to share her reading passion and enthusiasm to promote a love of reading. Our Coritani Ambassador is modelling her fluency skills and knowledge by reading to the younger learners and also listening to individual readers who are starting out on their journey. Our Ambassador is reliable, friendly, confident and full of praise.

We are excited to see what develops in the next chapter of this journey!

  • Inspiring Celebration

    Published 30/06/23

Our annual social trip to mark the changing of the school year was enjoyed by excited learners and staff.  Never before has so few adults been forced on so many rides by young people.  The sun shone but we were all safe with sun lotion and caps.  The water ride was an essential visit for younger people, the adults seemed less keen to be soaked.  A big shout out to the staff whose marathon session on the gut churning Cliffhanger ensured all learners had the chance to ‘enjoy’ it.

Once again everybody embraced this great opportunity for ‘Relationship based education’ and we left with smiles, stories and lotion limited tans.

  • Celebrating Excellence

    Published 30/06/23

It was fantastic to see our leavers at the awards lunch at Glanford Park in June.  To be able to celebrate the many successes that we have seen throughout their journey with us at Coritani made it a really special event.  The learners should be so proud of what they have achieved as indeed we are of them.  It was amazing to be joined by families to share this joy and see smiles on their faces. We wish you all the best in the future and know that they now have the foundations to go on and follow their dreams.

  • Respecting Art

    Published 23/06/23

Visiting the UNESCO World Heritage Site, year 9 and 10 had an Art and Photography filled day this term in Saltaire, Bradford. Learners had the fantastic opportunity to visit one of the largest collections of David Hockney’s art, including ‘A Year in Normandie’, a 90m long frieze that captures the changing seasons over the course of a year. Sitting to sketch at the gallery, we were able to experience art close up, seeing the mark making techniques the artist used to create his digital art works. Along with creating a mini artist transcription in oil pastels, learners recorded some of the mark making that Hockney used. Learners also walked along the river taking photographs with digital cameras, connecting to technical skills. Art and photography created will be used in GCSE projects, so look out for an update of what has been created soon!

Year 6 learners had a treat on the final day of SATS, after a tough week of tests. To celebrate how hard they had worked and how proud Coritani staff are of their resilience and determination, we visited Ashby Bowl. Whilst there it became obvious, that Ben definitely reigned 'King of Alley' and Corgan was hot on his heels. A great competitive game.

We then dashed over to McDonald's for a bite to eat and Luwana was great at volunteering as our very own personal waitress.

Finally, we made our way to Normanby Hall, where we played in the play area and ventured into the woods for hide and seek. Lots of fun was had by everyone and it was a great end to the week.
