  • Safe from Sexual Harm at Coritani

    Published 05/12/22

As part of KS3 and KS4 PSHE, we regularly carry out an anonymous ‘Sexual Harm in Schools’ Survey to ensure that our learners are safe within the academy. This initiative comes from a government report that highlighted that in the UK increasing numbers of learners have experienced sexual harm in schools. In addition to the survey, we also revisited the important topic of consent and what that entails. Learners watched the informational video ‘Tea Consent’ endorsed by Thames Valley Police. Staff and learners in the academy coloured their own teacup and placed it in the corridors as a visual reminder to embed the importance of being aware and safe.

  • Respecting the planet

    Published 02/12/22

What on Earth is going on in juniors? We are getting all geographical by exploring our Earth. First stop was an exhibition around the 7 continents and across the 5 oceans. The learners have created their own balloon globes and if you listen closely, you will still hear them singing the names of the continents from largest to smallest. Next, we took a deep dive into the water cycle, creating our own rain in a jug and water cycles in a bag. We are closely monitoring the progress of the condensation and precipitation. Our last stop of the week was a journey down the river from source to mouth, exploring its features and creating our own rivers using play-doh. Our learners have shown excellent curiosity during our learning journey this week.

One learners top fact: The Mariana Trench is the deepest oceanic trench in the world. Amazing

  • Inspiring Excellence - Ripon

    Published 21/10/22

Coritani Seniors travelled to Ripon to explore the world of Charles Dickens, where learners acted out a court case from the Dicken’s era.  It seems that once you get into character, and our learners did, it is easy to transport a 12 year old child to Australia.

They met the Guardians of the workhouse and experienced being left on the streets to suffer poverty in Victorian Ripon.  They also found out about life in a workhouse.

An inspiring excellence day so learners are ready for Oliver Twist in KS3 and A Christmas Carol as part of their GCSE English Literature.

  • Ready and Respectful Forest School

    Published 19/10/22

Coritani learners started the year with a snap crackle and pop as they built fires and enjoyed team building activities at Primrose Hill.  Throughout the day, they worked together respectfully and cook some simple food and prepared hot drinks. They also used the fire to make s’mores at the end of the day.

During the day they were also tasked with putting up hammocks and tents, so they are ready if they need to spend some time outdoors.

A busy week where learners and staff built relationships with each other and enjoyed nature.

  • Ready - Birmingham

    Published 17/10/22

Keystage 4 learners had the opportunity to visit the National Photography and Media Exhibition and Conference at the NEC, so they are ready for post 16 options.

Our learners got the chance to use many of the photo-stages to create memorable pictures. They had the opportunity to attend skills sessions and meet the expert workshops to build their skills and knowledge ready for GCSE study or just to improve they own photographs.

The learners spend the day meeting industry organisations, looking at the latest equipment and exploring careers options for the future.

  • Ready for careers

    Published 11/10/22

In September, Key Stage 2 went on a careers trip to Pizza Express in Doncaster and here, we were turned into chefs. We were coached in the methods of rolling out a perfectly shaped pizza base, spreading the tomato sauce to the exact amount needed for our base size and covering with our topping for full tastiness. Our pizzas were cooked to perfection within minutes and we were impressed at how amazing they tasted. This trip has inspired some of us to think about a career in cooking.

  • Caring2Learn Gold Award

    Published 17/03/22

Coritani Academy are proud to announce that we have achieved the gold standard of the Caring2Learn award.  We are only the second school in North Lincolnshire to achieve this status and it truly reflects the success of the relationship-based education that we deliver.

The Caring2Learn Award identifies excellent practice in education for the most vulnerable students. The programme assesses evidence of schools ethos and leadership, child centred approaches, work with parents / carers and partnerships with other professionals to support young people.

Achieving the highest standard shows our commitment to caring school principles, which ultimately puts children at the heart of everything we do.  One of our students was invited to present the award at the recent conference (see picture below)

  • Rights Respectful Schools Award

    Published 01/03/22

UNICEF works with schools to create safe and inspiring places to learn, where children are respected, their talents are nurtured and they are able to thrive. Coritani have achieved the bronze Rights Respecting Schools Award, giving the students the best chance to lead happy, healthy lives and to be responsible, active citizens.

Using the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child as a guide, the students developed a charter for Coritani, showing their commitment to the programme and the Rights that were the most important for our school community.

This Award recognises Coritani’s achievement in adopting the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child within the Academy and beyond.  We are now working towards the silver level (Rights Aware) to ensure these values are embedded within our practice.

  • Ready to Thrive

    Published 25/06/21

Thrive is part of our daily practice here at Coritani and as well as all staff using emotion coaching techniques, the students have 1:1 interventions to develop their social and emotional skills and support positive mental health.

We have been working on enabling young people to understand their emotions and helping them to develop the relevant skills required to manage these. Here we are using sand to explore feelings, actions and consequences through therapeutic stories.

Luke is showing great imagination and recognised some similarities between himself and the characters demonstrating emotional literacy skills.

The students look forward to and enjoy their sessions and we are seeing progress in terms of self-awareness through their individualised plans.

It is great to hear the students discussing and using some of the techniques they have learned around the academy. Supporting each other is a skill we hold dear within our mindset as we promote safe, ready, respectful and inspiring excellence.
