CEO's Update

As we slip back into some of our normal routines and ways of working, it is a pleasure to be writing to you via our academy newsletters once again and celebrating some of the amazing achievements our students have had, in what continue to be, on occasion, difficult times. Across the Trust, we have been able to begin to reintroduce activities and events that had been postponed or cancelled previously. The impact of this and the return to near unrestricted learning has been huge, with students able to begin to enjoy again the wider curriculum and all that it offers.

It is thanks to our amazing staff team that such experiences have been offered. They are an amazing bunch of professionals who are all now ready for a well-earned break; time with their own families and an opportunity to recharge their batteries.

I hope that however you celebrate the pending holiday season, you too get the chance to spend time with those you love and to enjoy a break.

Who knows what the next year will bring, but the one thing I am certain of is that I’m glad that whatever it is, I will be doing it as part of the IET team and with you and your children.

Principal's Update

Autumn Term at Coritani is always very busy and despite the pandemic, this year is no exception. You can find details of what we have all been up to within the newsletter, although this often forgets to celebrate the achievements of all our learners and staff that happen on a daily basis at Coritani.

Each day we see our learners develop and grow with such amazing passion and energy as they make their way through a very challenging period of education. So a huge thank you to them all and to the staff who guide them and support them along the way as they work together to achieve a Coritani Mindset.

Looking ahead 2022 looks like it may continue to challenge all of us in our ability to stay safe, and be ready for whatever is in store for us, but it should also be a time of optimism for all of our learners as we know they are capable of achieving whatever they set their mind to. We open to learners again on the 5^th January, until then enjoy the Christmas festivities in the best way you can, stay safe and have a fantastic New Year.

Favourite Phonics

Over the past half term, Juniors have begun daily phonics sessions with Marie. The programme has become one of the learners favourite sessions of the day and is beginning to have a real impact on our reading fluency.

Everyone, even the staff, have been practising their sounds, as well as their blending and segmenting skills.

For some of our learners, this will be a short-term programme, to reinforce and practice what they have already learnt at their home school. We are aiming to become the best, most fluent readers we possibly can and we know this will help us with all of our learning, in every single subject.

Burps, Bile & Bottoms

Recently, we have been learning a lot about the human body. Some of it has been extremely yucky, however, very interesting!

We have learned how the digestive system works, the effects of different substances on the teeth, using eggs, what spit is for and the effect it has on our food and digestion. Additionally, we have learned about the teeth of various animals and how they differ from human teeth.

There have also been many conversations about poo! We have even read a story about a mole, who found himself in a particularly unusual predicament with the substance! I am sure you are intrigued about that one!

Noise Academy

Over the course of the Autumn term, Noise Academy has been working with students every week building them up towards recording their own DJ mixes at the end of term. In less than 10 weeks some students have nearly gained both level 1 & 2 DJ awards and have their own masterpieces showcased on Soundcloud.com/noiseacademyuk

In the final week before Christmas, students will be completing their level 2 recordings before receiving their certificates. Noise Academy has also highlighted Coritani as one of the most innovative and forward-thinking settings in the area through the North Lincolnshire Music service.

London Calling

This term saw our year 11 students travel to London to see Romeo and Juliet. On what was, thankfully, a sunny but cold day, we visited the Globe to soak up the atmosphere circa 1600. In a change from the original script the cast were on BMX bikes, dressed in tracksuits but still faithful to the Shakespeare's words.

The day was started with a walk through the streets of London and a visit to St Pauls and finished with a trip up to the Sky Gardens to look over the City of London. Not every one was brave enough to go to the top.

Reading in York

In October the whole academy went to York to launch our whole school literacy. The trip included visits to The Jorvik Centre and St Mary’s Church.

These trips were designed to support students in developing their reading. Key stage 3 have been looking at myths and legends and so looked at the world of Viking storytelling.

The second visit was to St Mary’s the home of the immersive Van Gogh Experience. This trip was linked to a book used by key stage 2, called Kate and the Starry Night which is about a girl disappearing into a Van Gogh picture.

Remembrance Day

For Remembrance Day 2021, Coritani students and staff worked together to create a commemorative artwork to honour the many lives lost through war.

The exhibit consisted of six separate works, displaying a unique collection of individually designed poppies, created by students across Isle Education Trust and members of the local community.

The artwork was kindly exhibited for the public at Cafe Indie in Scunthorpe town centre over the Remembrance period. The art project was a fantastic way to bring together academies across the trust and the community, creating a respectful platform for collaboration and creativity.
